How Long Does it Take to Build a Custom Home?

Building a custom home is an exciting process that takes careful planning and coordination. At Nixon Custom Homes, we have more than 35 years of experience delivering luxury homes built for long-lasting quality.

While every project is different, the average timeline for a luxury custom home ranges from 12 to 27 months onsite, depending on the size and complexity of the design. Before construction begins, our team creates a detailed schedule that outlines what to expect and when, so clients always have a clear view of progress.

Below is a general breakdown of each construction phase.

1. Pre-construction (Approximately 5 Months)

This stage includes finalizing architectural plans, obtaining permits, and making selections for finishes and materials. We also coordinate with the design and engineering teams to make sure the project aligns with your vision, budget, and schedule.

2. Excavation and Foundation (Approximately 2 Months)

Typically during the last month of pre-construction, site preparation begins. The site is prepared, utilities are set, and the foundation is poured. Our team pays close attention to accuracy and site conditions to establish a strong, stable base for the home.

3. Framing (Approximately 4 Months)

During framing, the home’s structure is built, including walls, floors, and the roof system. This phase gives shape to the home and defines each room and space. The framing stage typically overlaps about 1 month with the previous stage.

4. Rough-In / MEP (Approximately 2 Months)

Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems are installed and inspected. This stage guarantees that the home’s infrastructure operates efficiently and meets all quality standards.

5. Exterior Work, Installation, and Drywall (Approximately 3 Months)

Exterior finishes like siding, roofing, windows, and doors are completed. Inside, insulation and drywall are installed to form the home’s interior walls and ceilings.

6. Finishing Work (Approximately 8 Months)

This stage includes all interior details such as flooring, cabinetry, millwork, lighting, and fixtures. Our team works closely with the designer and client to make sure each element reflects the intended style and level of craftsmanship. This is the longest and arguably most exciting phase of any new construction home.

7. Landscaping (Approximately 3 Months)

During the final 3 months of our finishing work, we tackle the exterior areas. Landscaping, driveways, and walkways are installed to create a cohesive look that complements the home’s design.
